Nash's world

by on Sep.19, 2012, under Musings, News

I just read on the news that Maldives polices service have taken owner ship of a brand spanking new Oracle Exadata. This is such a wast of public funds when the government is at best struggling at worst unable to provide basic public services to the people.  Since i am some what familiar with oracle products and pricing and being a numbers guy i did some back of envelop calculations.
For a minimum config

Item US$
Oracle Exadata x2-2 quarter rack 330000
Exadata Storage Server X2-2 55000
Annual Support 76000

from the picture in the news article  it actually looks like it is a full rack which would be:

Item US$
Oracle Exadata x2-2 full rack 1100000
Exadata Storage Server X2-2 55000
Annual Support 210000

Implementation of the system would be between 70,000 – 150,000 on the low side

Also knowing how oracle operate they probably convinced them to buy ODI and Golden Gate too which run around 6,000 US$ per core. I will let the reader decide how much that will be on a modern server grade  processor with 2x 8 cores.

Their is absolutely no legitimate reason why police would need this kind of hardware to serve 350,000 people. Any DBA who cannot design and optimize data bases with biggest table holding about 350,000 rows (assuming 1 record per citizen) on hardware that is 1/5 of the price of a Exadata solution  needs to be taken out the back, shot stabbed and crucified and his head hung on city gates as a warning to other DBA’s of his incompetence .
Another big question is why did not the experts at NCIT not advice police and stop the police from spending this money ?
Of course all of this is assuming that database is required for legitimate police work. Now if they are tracking every phone call, sms, email (highly doubt full), and URL’s (i am looking at you ROL/Focus ), yes i agree they will require hardware like this.  But if that is the case they are going beyond serve and protect and invading privacy.

IGMH mobile/web app open for testing/usage

by on Aug.30, 2012, under News, Programing

It was one of those rare quiet morning in office (touch wood) when Naail @kudanai ( pinged me about a interesting problem he had. He asked me for suggestion on scraping IGMH doctors duty roster from this ancient looking aspx page. At the time he had google app engine app and  He was attempting at the time to use YQL to rangle the data out of the page as the page was being served out of a non standard port on the server wich appengine did not like.

I suggested to him to port the app over to django proper and move the whole application over to my server. To this end we ported app over to django added some fancy (ie: stupid) caching so that we dont kill the poor server we were scraping the data from front end is built on jquerytouch and compass. API stubs are also available to any one who want to get some some sane looking data for their own apps. For access ping Naail or me (@NashRafeeg).

To to try it out for yourselves, visit:

Some Known Issues:
The display code is built on jQTouch, an thus inherits its flaws and shortcomings. For example, we rely on -webkit-overflow-scrolling: touch to handle the inertial scrolling. This will fail on most android devices and so on.
also, yes, we know about the “back” button issue.
The page currently doesn’t have a timed/manual refresh mechanism (which would ideally be present in the queue data view). You have to go back to home, and then back to the view in order to reload the data.

For those of you more technically inclined
The Backend is
* Nginx
* Django with FastCGI
* Mechanize
* Beautiful Soup
Front End is powered by Jquerytouch and Compass

For how we got started on this endeavor hit up

I have upgraded to ubuntu 11.10 oneiric ocelot yesterday from a regal panda 11.04  hear are my thoughts on it.

The good..

  • The interface has been polished and the Unity interface is usable now
  • I like the new login screen with its smooth animation. But some how when you lock the machine the old interface is visible
  • The lock screen animation is much smoother now
  • The icons that have been used look much nicer and cleaner
  • search inside unity works and their no lag between pressing the windows key and the unity menu opening up
  • The new Empathy and Gwibber looks really nice
  • The new software center is really nice and easy to find applications

Mathematical Argument for Reducing Maldivian MP’s Salary

by on Apr.05, 2011, under Musings, News

I was reading minivan news today and came across this article regarding the parliamentarians “Privileges” Bill. In the article MP Mahloof argues that the 20,000 MVR additional allowance was needed because  of “number of people petitioning MPs for money and assistance”.  He says that he is   he is giving away about 2000 US dollars a month (roughly 41 %) to constituents. So this got me thinking why not establish a charity with the amount that MP are giving out and pool the money together so to reach more people. Lets do the math and find out how much exactly will this hypothetical charity will have.

Even though New Moon has made a bazillion dollars and even though the third Twilight book, Eclipse, is already filming, Summit has declined to announce the fourth and final Twilight book as a movie. There’s a good reason for this: Breaking Dawn is completely fucking insane, and it is probably totally unfilmable. But if they do film it… man, we are in for a treat.

Breaking Dawn opens with Bella Swan, the lacteal heroine of the series, finally getting married to Edward Cullen, the mopey vampire hero. They go off to honeymoon on Isle Esme, a Brazilian island the Cullen clan owns (this is already ridiculous beyond belief. Imagine a vampire going snorkeling; it basically happens in this book), and Edward is afraid to fuck his new bride. The reason: he’s super strong and she’s just a human – Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenex type of situation here. But Bella wears him down and Edward throws it in her – and knocks her the fuck out, leaving her badly bruised.
